20 March 2006      Newsletter 40 will be despatched to members in the near future.

There continue to be numerous changes and additions to the approved routes into UK.  Visit the DEFRA website for an update:  http://www.defra.gov.uk/animalh/quarantine/pets/procedures/support-info/routes.htm

20 December 2005   Numerous pet owners are still being stopped from entering UK because there are errors, inaccuracies or omissions in their PET PASSPORTS. We have experience of a number of EU vets filling these passports in improperly. Owners MUST check very carefully at the time they are completed or added to (e.g. during tick and worm treatment) that they are correct.

We take this opportunity to wish our readers a very happy Christmas and New Year.

15 December 2005  General Update

Argentina, Guam, Trinidad and Tobago, Mexico, Belarus and Romania have now been added to the list of qualifying countries under the EC PETS Regulation. Dogs, cats and ferrets from, or prepared in, these countries can enter the UK without quarantine provided that they meet all the requirements for entry into the UK from qualifying third countries. For the full list see: http://www.defra.gov.uk/animalh/quarantine/pets/territory.htm

20 October 2004 - The following countries will become qualifying countries for the Pet Travel Scheme; Chile, Hong Kong, Russian Federation and the United Arab Emirates plus the Spanish Islands of Cueta and Melilla.

24 September 2004:  FRENCH PASSPORT PROBLEM.      We can confirm that the French will not have the new style Passports in place on 1 October and probably not for a further 3 weeks.   However, BELGIUM does have them in place. We therefore recommend that anyone returning to UK in early   October who has not already got a new EU Passport OR an old style valid PETS Entry Certificate issued prior to 30 September, call on a Belgian vet to have an EU Passport issued. There are several in Ostende and one in De Panne, thirty minutes from Calais. We can supply details if required. We further recommend that you ask the vet to insert ALL the vaccination dates, starting from the one done just prior to the date of blood sampling. Strangely, this is not obligatory under the EU legislation, but is a sensible precaution to show an unbroken vaccination history.

16 September 2004:  POTENTIAL PASSPORT PROBLEM
Because there was a delay in introduction of the EU Scheme it was agreed that from 3 July to 30 September 2004, to qualify for entry to UK a pet must hold either the new blue EU Passport or a Pet Travel Entry/Re-Entry Certificate (issued by one of the approved countries). It was also agreed that even after 1 October the old style Pet Travel Entry/Re-entry Certificate would be acceptable until it expires, IF ISSUED BEFORE 30 September.
Thus from 1 October a pet needs either a blue passport or a valid old style certificate issued before 30 September.
The problem arises from the fact that some EU countries (including France Lux and Belgium) do not yet have the blue passport in place. Having spoken to the authorities, it seems that the French passport may not be in place from 1 October.
Therefore, pets travelling from France from 1 Oct that have not by then obtained an old style French Travel Certificate, will not be able to obtain a new EU/French Passport and will be denied access to UK.
DEFRA are aware and say that they are not allowed to change the regs to overcome this (temporary?) problem.

28 June 2004:  Notwithstanding the announcement below (19 June), the EU has finally stated that the EU Pet Travel Scheme will indeed start on 3 July 2004.  Passports are now available at UK veterinary practices although pets may continue to travel with existing and extant Travel Certificates (UK Pet Re-entry certificate for UK) until their validity expires.

22nd Nov 2002:  Early Release Kennel document updated on Members Page.

21st Nov 2002: The Minister announced today that UK Pet Travel Scheme is to be extended to USA and Canada from 11 December 2002. DEFRA is working on the introduction of the necessary certificates and working with at least one airline to provide the required 'approved' route. It is not known whether both these essentials elements will be in place by 11 Dec. In their absence owners may import pets to a quarantine kennel for 2/3 days and apply for early release.

15th Nov 2002: Details of a Quarantine Kennel experienced in the Early Release procedure and near Heathrow are available on the Member's Page. In addition to a rabies vaccination certificate and blood test result, dogs must have been vaccinated against Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis and Parvovirus.

11th Nov 2002: Members preparing pets for the UK Pet Travel Scheme in US or CANADA are advised to persuade their vets to write the date/month fully (i.e.  5 November 2002) when completing vaccination certificates and blood sample forms.   5-10-2002 may mean MAY to you but it means November in the UK and may cause trouble for pets entering UK under the Early Release scheme.

A FRENCH PET TRAVEL SCHEME.  The French Government  has just introduced new legislation effective from NOVEMBER 2 2002 on the import of a wide variety of animals, including pet dogs and cats,  from countries in which rabies exists. This requires them to be microchipped, vaccinated and a sample drawn (no less than 30 days from the date of vaccination and more than THREE months from the date of import) and tested. A French language  Certificate Sanitaire confirming this must then be completed by your vet. The French Embassy in the country of origin is responsible for providing a translation to help the vet and we are currently trying to obtain an English version. Cats and dogs are also required to have been treated for four further maladies.
